DUTIES OF A NEW MEXICO SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER

  1. SET DIRECTION Establish the district's vision, goals, and priorities to ensure student success.

  2. ADOPT POLICY Create, review, and approve policies that guide the operation of the school district.

  3. APPROVE THE BUDGET Review and adopt the annual budget and ensure responsible stewardship of public funds.

  4. OVERSIGHT & ACCOUNTABILITY Monitor district performance, academic progress, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws.

  5. HIRE & EVALUATE THE SUPERINTENDENT Hire the superintendent and provide support and evaluation of their performance.

  6. ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY Serve as a link between the community and the school district by listening, communicating, and advocating for public education.

  7. ACT IN THE BEST INTEREST OF STUDENTS Make decisions that put students first—always—without regard for personal or political gain.

  8. ATTEND QUARTERLY CONFERENCES Attend state-required quarterly school board conferences for training, updates, and collaboration to better serve your district and students.
