Welcome to the 2026–2027 school year! It is an honor to serve as the Superintendent of Estancia Municipal Schools. I am excited to join this outstanding community and look forward to working together to provide every student with the opportunities they need to succeed.
My leadership philosophy is simple: student success, open communication, accountability, and high expectations supported by strong relationships. As we begin this school year, I am committed to being visible, listening to our students, families, staff, and community members, and ensuring that every decision we make is focused on what is best for our students.
This school year brings new opportunities as we continue to strengthen academic achievement, expand opportunities for our students, and provide a safe, supportive, and welcoming learning environment where every student can thrive.

Welcome back to the 2026-2027 school year. This is a reminder that Estancia's secondary JumpStart Day is next Thursday, July 30th. New students along with 7th and 9th grade students need to arrive by 7:40 and report to the high school main gym. During this full day of school, students will get their schedule, participate in a tour, meet teachers, attend their scheduled classes and become familiar with the middle and high schools. Buses will be running their routes this day as well.
In addition, all 7th through 12th grade students will receive their 2026-2027 class schedule on the first day of school, August 3, 2026. If you have any questions, please contact the high school at 505-384-2002.
Like many of the other New Mexico school districts, Estancia Municipal Schools is transitioning from PowerSchool to Synergy, which is a new Student Information System (SIS) database. Synergy functions as a centralized hub to manage student data, grade, schedules, attendance as well as facilitate communication between educators, students, and parents.
Our district continues to work diligently to implement this system and will reach out to parents and/or guardians once ParentVUE, (the equivalent of Parent Portal within PowerSchool) is available. Please watch for updates and more information in the following weeks.

It is with GREAT pleasure the district introduces John Maldonado as the next EMSD Superintendent.
Mr. Maldonado comes to the district with a wealth of experience, most recently as the Superintendent of Questa for the last five years. He has also served as principal and as a special education teacher.
Dr. Sims will be working closely with Mr. Maldonado in the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition for the district. His official start date is July 1st.
🧠 Youth Mental Health First Aid
Date: Saturday, March 14, 2026
Time: 9:00am–4:30pm
Location: Technology Leadership High School (5000 Marble Ave NE, Albuquerque, NM 8711)
What You’ll Learn
Youth Mental Health First Aid equips adults 18+ who work with youth (ages 12–18) to:
✔ Recognize signs of mental health and substance use challenges
✔ Understand typical adolescent development
✔ Respond effectively in crisis and non-crisis situations
✔ Apply the 5-step MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE)
This training is ideal for educators, school staff, coaches, parents, Youth Peer Support Specialists, youth serving organizations, and community members working directly with youth.
Training Details
Pre-Work:
Approximately 2 hours of self-paced online modules must be completed prior to the in-person training.
Stipend:
Participants who complete both the pre-work and full-day training will receive a $300 stipend (W-9 required).
Capacity:
Limited to the first 30 registrants.
Food:
Snacks and lunch will be provided.

Staff participated in a great learning opportunity with speaker Kevin Honeycutt, including a jam session featuring Brenda Blaisure on keyboards and Dillon Erwin on drums while the district staff belted out Journey's Don't Stop Believing. We believe in the future we are building for our students, rich in opportunities and success.
